The Conservation Commission worked with the Recreation Commission and the Shirley Village Partnership on upkeep and improvement at Fredonian Park and gratefully acknowledges the contributions of these two groups.

The Conservation, Recreation and Greenway Commissions also worked together in 1993 to begin to chart a master plan for the use of the Benjamin Hill recreation area.

In 1993, the Town accepted a gift from Kenneth Rumbo of approximately 2 acres of land, to be managed by the Conservation Commission, on the Squannacook River. This land, essentially an island, is an excellent spot for canoeists and others to enjoy the river. Another piece on Holden Road, approximately 2.23 acres, is hoped to be acquired in 1994. This piece is important to the Spruce Swamp Greenway and as a link to existing and proposed trail systems. The Conservation Commission would like to encourage property owners to consider land gifts to the Town or placing conservation restrictions on their land. This practice can result in tax savings to the property owner and enrichment to the Town.

Trail systems are currently being developed on the Holden Road Conservation Area and at Valley Farm. Many to Hermann & Kate Field for their generosity and help. Thanks are due, also, to the Greenway Committee for their help not only in this joint project, but for the ongoing work at the Squannacook Conservation Area.

The Conservation Commission regretfully accepted the resignation of long time member and current chairperson, Robert Prescott, Jr. His expertise will be sorely missed. In June, Commissioners unanimously elected E. Heidi Roddis chairperson and Steve Shollenberger vice-chair.

Respectfully submitted,

E. Heidi Roddis, Chair
Steve Shollenberger, Vice-Chair
Ron Farnsworth, Member
Linda Vickery, Member
Bob Burkhardt, Member
